Port Royal
Port Royal, Jamaica also was ruined by the force of nature. One of the most powerful centers of commerce in the New World and the safe harbor for pirates of the region was destroyed in 1692 by an earthquake, tsunami, and subsequent fires. It was vastly believed to be the punishment for all the sins and cruelty of the city.
Port Royal was sinking gradually over the centuries and now is mostly at the seabed. But some areas are still on the shore and today Port Royal is growing into a popular tourist destination. The underwater part of the city is a popular spot for divers and archaeologists. And for others there are cruise ships, exciting history and marvelous nature.
