Herakleion
The legend about Atlantis is a popular subject for speculation since antiquity. Scholars, adventurers and tricksters are seeking proofs to confirm its existence. Meanwhile, there is lot of other important pieces of human history hidden at the seabed. Like Herakleion — one of the most famous cities ever submerged, which ruins were found in 2000 just a few kilometers off the coast near Alexandria.
The known history of Herakleion goes back to at least 12th century BC. It was built on several islands in the Nile Delta. Later, at the beginning of the modern era, islands gradually sank, probably after series of earthquakes.
